Often times I find myself daydreaming. I believe this habit is responsible for my creativity in photography, music, and all things design. Yet, I have to say, that most recently I have a new found appreciation for the ordinary and intimate. Our obsession with production, progress, and aesthetics has trained our eyes to ignore the beauty in the ordinary. This is why I created my iphoneography project: FROM THE POCKET.
My FROM THE POCKET project features images created using Apple's first-generation iPhone and Apple's iPhone 3Gs cameras. Images were edited and processed using various iPhone photography applications only. I would describe my FROM THE POCKET project as a tri-hybrid of genres: ordinary, intimate, and street.
FROM THE POCKET: BOOK ONE is in early production with Blurb, Inc. - anticipated release date is Spring 2010. Also, I am expanding the FROM THE POCKET project to encompass only photographs of my son, Owyn. This project will be titled "FROM THE POCKET: OCEE", and a separate tumblr site will be launched for OCEE in early Spring 2010.
I upload the images from my iPhone directly to the FROM THE POCKET tumblr site. I've set a personal rule to not spend any longer than 10 minutes editing an image. I feel that the longer I look at it, and edit here and there, the more likely I will over-edit and wash out the original beauty of the photo. I reside in the beautiful city of Chicago, so most of the time the subjects of my iphoneography are merely people, places, and things I see on a daily basis - although I have images in the gallery from my travels as well. Nothing in the FROM THE POCKET project is posed, intentionally placed, or predicted. I believe this holds true to my original intention of starting the project - which was to highlight the ordinary and intimate in an attractive picture. It's amazing how beautiful your life can be - if you just slow down and look (or take a picture).
